Florida Turnpike Accident, MARTIN COUNTY, FLORIDA — A double-fatal crash on Florida’s Turnpike in the Stuart area led to a full shutdown of both northbound and southbound lanes on Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The crash occurred near Mile Marker 133 and prompted an immediate response from the Florida Highway Patrol, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, and Martin County Fire Rescue. Officials confirmed that the incident involved a major traffic crash investigation.
Authorities said both directions of the Turnpike were completely closed as emergency crews worked the scene. Northbound traffic was blocked from before Mile Marker 128 to just before Exit 133, while southbound lanes were shut down from near Mile Marker 134 to beyond Exit 133, causing significant delays in the area.
Officials also closed on-ramps at nearby exits, including Exit 116 and Exit 133, as traffic was diverted away from the heavily impacted stretch of roadway. Drivers were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while emergency operations continued.
Florida Highway Patrol labeled the incident as a “major” crash and confirmed it was being handled as a traffic homicide investigation due to the fatalities involved. Details surrounding the cause of the crash have not yet been released.
Traffic on the Turnpike remained at a standstill for an extended period as investigators documented the scene and worked to clear the roadway. Motorists experienced heavy congestion throughout the surrounding areas of Martin County.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under active investigation, and authorities have not yet released further information about the victims or what may have caused the collision. Officials say updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
