Skylar Mackenzie Vargo Obituary, HENRICO COUNTY, VIRGINIA — A devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 295 in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 9, 2026, claimed the life of 23-year-old Skylar Mackenzie Vargo of South Chesterfield, Virginia. The fatal collision occurred near the 28-mile marker and prompted a large emergency response as authorities worked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash happened at approximately 2:27 a.m. when a Hyundai traveling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 collided head-on with a tractor-trailer. The force of the impact caused the tractor-trailer to veer from its lane, cross the median, and enter the southbound lanes before coming to a stop.
Investigators identified the driver of the Hyundai as Skylar Mackenzie Vargo. Authorities said she became trapped inside her vehicle after the collision, and the car was quickly engulfed in flames. Emergency crews responded to the scene and worked to rescue Vargo from the wreckage before transporting her to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash. Due to the severity of the incident, members of the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and the Motor Carrier Safety Team responded to assist with documenting the scene and determining the events that led to the collision.
Hazardous materials crews were also dispatched after the tractor-trailer began leaking diesel fuel and oil onto the interstate. Portions of I-295 remained partially closed for several hours while emergency personnel cleared the damaged vehicles, cleaned the fuel spill, and completed their on-scene investigation. Authorities have since confirmed that all lanes of the interstate have reopened.
The reason the Hyundai was traveling in the wrong direction has not yet been determined. Virginia State Police said the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation, and no additional information has been released as detectives continue to examine the evidence.
The sudden passing of Skylar Mackenzie Vargo has left her family, friends, and the South Chesterfield community mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon. As loved ones remember her and celebrate her life, many have extended heartfelt condolences and prayers during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.
