Chris Rushing Obituary, LACOMBE, LOUISIANA — Chris Rushing, a City of Covington employee, died Wednesday evening after heroically attempting to rescue his granddaughter from the waters of Bayou Lacombe in St. Tammany Parish, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the tragic incident occurred at approximately 7:43 p.m. near Lake Road after the young girl accidentally fell into the bayou. Rushing immediately entered the water in an effort to save his granddaughter but began struggling during the rescue attempt and failed to resurface. Another woman also entered the bayou and successfully pulled the child to safety.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and specialized rescue personnel, quickly arrived at the scene. Five trained swimmers conducted an extensive search of the bayou before locating Rushing beneath the water. Rescue crews brought him ashore and immediately initiated lifesaving measures before transporting him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff, Rushing later died at the hospital. His body has been transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause and manner of death. Authorities have not released the age of the child, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
The loss has deeply affected the Covington community, where Rushing was widely respected for his dedication and service. According to Covington City Councilman John Botsford, Rushing served in the City of Covington’s Cultural Arts Department and was admired by coworkers and residents for his commitment and kindness.
