George Johnson Sr. Obituary, CHICAGO, IL — George E. Johnson Sr., the pioneering entrepreneur and founder of Johnson Products Company, has died at the age of 99. Johnson, whose groundbreaking work in the beauty industry helped transform the market for Black consumers, leaves behind a legacy of innovation, business leadership, and community impact.
Born in Mississippi in 1927, Johnson moved with his family to Chicago as a young child, where he developed the determination and work ethic that would later define his remarkable career. His early experiences and understanding of the challenges faced by Black consumers in the beauty industry inspired him to create products that addressed needs largely ignored by mainstream companies at the time.
In 1954, Johnson founded Johnson Products Company, building what would become one of the most successful Black-owned businesses in American history. The company introduced widely recognized hair care brands, including Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen, which became influential products within Black communities and played a significant role in celebrating Black identity and culture.
Johnson Products reached a historic milestone in 1971 when it became the first Black-owned company to be listed on the American Stock Exchange. The achievement marked a significant moment for Black entrepreneurs and demonstrated the possibilities of minority-owned businesses competing on a national level.
Beyond business success, Johnson used his platform to promote positive representation and community advancement. Johnson Products became known for advertising campaigns that celebrated Black beauty and confidence, while the company’s sponsorship of the iconic television program “Soul Train” further connected the brand with generations of viewers and helped support a major cultural platform.
Throughout his life, Johnson remained committed to giving back through philanthropy, mentorship, and efforts focused on creating opportunities for future generations. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming a nationally respected business leader inspired countless entrepreneurs and community leaders.
George Johnson Sr.’s passing marks the loss of a trailblazer whose contributions extended far beyond the beauty industry. He will be remembered as a visionary entrepreneur who broke barriers, created opportunities, and helped shape the history of Black-owned businesses in America.
Family, friends, and admirers continue to honor his extraordinary life and lasting contributions. His legacy will live on through the company he built, the people he inspired, and the communities he served. May he rest in peace.
